A proud tradition since 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol program has helped equip Patrollers with the skills and resources needed to ensure children commute to and from school safely. The AAA School Safety Patrol program now includes more than 600,000 patrollers in 31,000 schools nationwide who dedicate their time to ensure pedestrians are safe. The Patroller duties are a valuable contribution to the major reduction of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. Their daily achievements, as well as those of their Patrol Advisors and the school they represent, deserve to be recognized on a national level.

Lifesaving Award: The AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award is the highest award given to members of the AAA School Safety Patrol. Recipients are selected patrol members who, while on duty, have saved the life of a person in imminent danger. Since its establishment in 1949, the Lifesaving Award has been presented to more than 399 boys and girls from 31 states and the District of Columbia who have been honored with the Lifesaving Medal.

Patroller of the Year Award: In 2002, AAA introduced the National Patroller of the Year Award to recognize the patrollers who best exemplify leadership qualities and performs their duties effectively and responsibly, without incident. The National Patrollers of the Year are selected from a field of Patrollers nationwide. Nominees also must submit an essay expressing their feelings regarding their patrol experience. Patrollers of the Year award recipients will be honored at the Universal Orlando AAA School Safety Patrol Breakfast and Awards ceremony this year.

Charles M. Hayes Advancement Fund: The AAA School Safety PatrolTM Charles M. Hayes Advancement fund through the Foundation for Traffic Safety assists approximately five schools with the advancement of existing patrol programs. Schools should detail their existing patrol program practices and plans for future expansion. Emphasis is placed on the educational, safety skill, and leadership development of the patrol program. Winners of the 2012 AAA School Safety Patrol™ Advancement Grants will be announced in April, 2012.
