'Going Places' Goes to China

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." — Chinese Proverb
In all of my travels, there has been one destination that has eluded me...the wondrous country of China. It is considered one of the oldest civilizations known to man, with more than 4,000 years of recorded history. China is rich in spectacular man-made and natural wonders, a mysterious blend of modern metropolis and ancient tradition.

I invite you to join me on a remarkable 15-day epic adventure to explore the Forbidden City, walk the Great Wall, cruise the Yangtze, and dine on scrumptious Chinese feasts. Special highlights have been included that will take you behind the scenes and into the heart of local regions.

Joining me as a host on this trip will be my daughter Sarah, who is well-known to frequent readers of Going Places. On these pages, you've read of Sarah diving along sun-kissed coasts, following elephants through the Serengeti, and climbing Ireland's Mount Nathan.

Please join us on our next chapter as we discover the treasures of China together in this exclusive Going Places Goes to China travel experience.

DAY 3 - Treasures of Beijing
Our transpacific flight will take us across the International Date Line, and upon arrival in Beijing, we'll check into the luxurious Shangri-La Traders Hotel in the heart of the city. There, we'll have the opportunity to rest up and explore a bit at leisure. Beijing, renowned for the success of the 2008 Summer Olympics, is the country's capital and considered the epicenter for some of China's most intriguing national treasures.

Ancient traditions will provide an invigorating start to our day as we gather with locals near the Temple of Heaven for Tai Chi, a classic morning ritual. We'll tour this architectural masterpiece, built in the early 1400s, before continuing on to the famed Tiananmen Square, one of the world's largest public plazas.

Perhaps one of the most famous imperial palaces in the world, the Forbidden City was home to the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties from 1368 to 1911. We'll follow in the footsteps of these famous rulers as we tour the grounds and buildings that make up this impressive complex.
