AAA Roadwise Review - A Tool to Help Seniors Drive Safely Longer
Technical Questions & Answers

Q: My computer rebooted after the install, but the program did not begin.
After you correctly install the program and reboot your computer, a Roadwise Review icon can be found on your desktop. Double-clicking this icon will start the program.
Q: I do not have anything to measure 10 feet (3 meters) -- must it be exact?
A couple of inches one way or the other should not affect your results. But, the tests in this program were scientifically validated using the distance of 10 feet (3 meters), so get as close to this distance as you can. Here’s one idea: a standard piece of typing paper or notebook paper is 11 inches long – eleven pieces laid end to end would be just 1 inch over ten feet.
Q: Media Player 9 installation starts but then stops displaying a message about System Restore.
If system restore is disabled on your computer when the Windows Media Player 9 install begins, you will be prompted to enable this feature on your PC. To enable system restore, right-click on 'My Computer' from the desktop, select 'Properties', select the 'System Restore' tab, and then enable system restore by unchecking the box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives." (on Windows XP).
Q: Why are some of the install options unchecked?
The install program checks to see if you have software installed on your PC that is required to run Roadwise Review. If you already have all the software on your PC, then all of the install options will be automatically unchecked by default. However, you can check the box for any option if you would like to reinstall the software. This may be necessary if Roadwise Review does not run correctly on your computer.
Q: My computer crashed during the installation/use of Roadwise Review – what should I do?
You will need to call technical support in order to understand what could have caused the computer to crash. Prior to doing so, however, please locate two files which will greatly help technical support in learning the cause of the failure. On your desktop, click on the "My Computer" icon. Once open, please click on the local drive icon, usually the C: drive on most computer. Within this drive you should find a folder labeled AAA Roadwise Review near the top. Double-click on this folder to open. Within this folder are two files, named "trace" and "AAAsetup." Both of these files should be attached to an email and sent to technical support for analysis.
Q: Why can't I use my Windows 95 computer to run the software?
Roadwise Review works best on computers that can play Windows Media Video (or files ending in ".wmv"). Although some older computers will play the MPEG version of the video, computers running Windows 95 typically need special MPEG-1 decoder boards installed in their computer to play back MPEG-1 smoothly. So, even if the software did install on a Windows 95 computer, it would not run. To avoid the frustration of taking time to install the software only to find out it won't work, a message box appears when the install program is started indicating that the software cannot be installed on the computer.
Q: Why is the playback of the video choppy?
This type of problem usually indicates one or more of the following: (1) there are too many programs and processes running, (2) you need to obtain the latest drivers for your PC, (3) your CD-ROM drive is too slow, or (4) the video card is too slow. Of these options, the first two are the only no-cost options. As such, the first two options should be performed before upgrading the CD-ROM drive and/or graphics card.

First, you need to view the list of running processes to see if there any that can be safely stopped. This can be done by holding down the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys simultaneously for at least 1 second and then clicking on the tab labeled "Processes" in the window that pops up. If you don’t know what a particular process or program does, type the name that appears in the process list into Google (www.google.com) and find out what the program or process does. For example, you will see processes named "SYSTEM", "System Idle Process", "svchost.exe", "services.exe", and "lsass.exe". These are typically safe and valid processes that should not be stopped. When Roadwise Review is running, you will see a process called "STAAARRT.EXE" which should not be stopped unless you want to exit Roadwise Review. You should choose to end processes that are not essential for running Windows and Roadwise Review (such as WINWORD.EXE which is Microsoft Word, or mspaint.exe which is Microsoft Paint) and particularly those processes using a lot of CPU time (look in the column labeled "CPU"). If you find a process that might be unnecessarily using up your computer resources, press the "End Process" button at the bottom of the window. [IMPORTANT: Save any open documents first and do not press the "End Process" unless you are sure what it does.]

Second, you need to perform a Windows Update. This can be accomplished by opening Internet Explorer and selecting "Tools" > "Windows Update" (in Windows XP). The Microsoft Windows Update site will appear and you need to follow the prompts to update your computer. There are critical updates that must be installed and driver updates that are optional. To ensure that Roadwise Review plays optimally on your PC, the driver updates (such as drivers for your graphics card) need to be installed.

If you suspect the CD-ROM is too slow, call technical support and we will instruct you on the use of a tool that will optimize your CD-ROM for video playback.
Q: Why are my results not displayed after completing the UFOV test?
This occurs when the program encounters 3 timing errors when trying to display the objects for this test. If your computer is more than about 2 years old, there may not be anything you can do to rectify this problem. However, if you have a newer computer or one that is considered "high-end" even though it is over 2 years old, you might want to try closing down unneeded processes (see instructions under previous FAQ), that are running on your computer. Such processes can interfere with the precise timing required to run Roadwise Review without timing errors. For example, it is common for firewall software to interfere with precise timing. If you would like to consider temporarily disabling the firewall on your computer, please contact technical support for step by step instructions on how to do this safely.
Q: Why doesn't the video play?
First, try reinstalling the software paying attention to any messages you are displayed. It is possible that the install process did not complete.

Second, assuming there were no errors during the install process, try running the video clips from the disk. To do this, open the folder labeled "MPG" or "WMV" on the Roadwise Review CD and double click on any file in the folder. If it plays, then the problem is likely with DirectX. To troubleshoot this problem, run the dxdiag.exe program by clicking on "Start" > "Run" and typing in "dxdiag" (without the quotes) in the box labeled "Open:". When the test is complete, click the "Save All Information" button and send the file created (default is "DxDiag.txt" saved to the Desktop) to technical support.

If the video does not play when you double-click on a file on the CD, then it is likely a problem with Windows Media Player 9 and possibly DirectX9 as well. To troubleshoot this problem, send the DxDiag.txt as described above.

Q: I chose to save my Roadwise Review results – where were they saved?
Your results were saved to your desktop. You can view these at any time by simply locating and double-clicking on the icon labeled "Roadwise Review Results ." The file should open automatically in the Paint program. If it doesn't, right click on the icon and select "Open With" and then look for a graphic editor program in the list. If this still doesn't work (which will be very unusual since Paint is installed by default on all Windows computers), then it may be necessary to download a graphic program.
Q: How do I uninstall Roadwise Review?
