Parents with Teen Drivers
Parents play a "key"
role in Graduated Driver Licensing.

Regardless of what the law is in your state, AAA recommends that parents set clear driving rules before handing over the keys to young drivers. An excellent way to do that is with the AAA Parent-Teen Agreement.

This detailed document helps parents and the new driver agree in advance what is expected of all parties in a wide range of situations related to driving.

Graduated Driver Licensing Saves Lives.

Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) refers to the practice of easing teens into driving, letting them gain experience behind the wheel under less risky circumstances before allowing full licensure.

According to research funded by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, states that implemented GDL systems have seen a 38% reduction in fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers.

Seven components of Graduated Driver LIcensing were shown to make a substantial difference in saving teen lives:

  • A minimum age of at least 16 years for receiving a learner's permit.
  • A requirement to hold the learner's permit for at least 6 months before receiving a license that allows any unsupervised driving.
  • A requirement for certification of at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice during th learner stage.
  • An intermediate stage of licensing with a minimum entry age of at least 16 years and 6 months.
  • A nighttime driving restriction for intermediate license holders, beginning no later than 10 p.m.
  • A passenger restriction for intermediate license holders, allowing no more than one passenger (except family members).
  • A minimum age of 17 years for full, unrestricted licensure.

These seven components were chosen for the study because they were the most common in GDL systems through the country. They should not be considered in exhaustive list of safety provisions for teen drivers.
